Employment Law Clinic

Surrey Law Centre, the charity which provides free legal advice to Surrey people who cannot afford to pay a solicitor, opens an employment law clinic on 12 May.

This new venture is the initiative of Just Employment Solicitors, the specialist employment law practice, and Hart Brown Solicitors, who have six offices throughout Surrey and South London. Both firms have offices in Guildford.

Uniquely, the advice from solicitors will be supplemented by expert advice from Peter Wilford of Gateway Career Management, of Cranleigh, an outplacement consultant. Peter will be on hand to provide free advice to those trying to find a job or seeking to change jobs.

The clinics will operate on the second Thursday of each month, from 6.00 to 8.00 pm, at Surrey Law Centre, 34-36 Chertsey Street, Guildford. Bookings can be made now by ‘phoning Surrey Law Centre 01483 215000 or e-mail info@surreylawcentre.org.

Laura Melbourne, practice manager at Surrey Law Centre, said:

‘I am delighted that we are now able to extend our service to give expert advice on employment law and job hunting. I am sure there will be a high demand.’

Liz Whitehead, senior solicitor at Hart Brown, said:

‘We are delighted to be taking part in this new initiative. In addition to helping local people at a time when life can be quite difficult we are l also providing a learning platform for students at the College of Law who will be observing meetings with clients and learning about how  the law can make a big difference  to people’s lives. Giving back to the community is of great importance to Hart Brown.”

Geoff Bignell, chairman of Just Employment, said:

‘We get frequent calls from people unable to afford employment law legal advice and this new clinic will fill an important gap. As solicitors, we are keen to help people who would not otherwise have access to justice.’

Peter Wilford, of Gateway Career Management, said:

‘My expertise is in helping people to get the jobs they want. This may be getting a job from unemployment; or making a career change. People with employment law problems are generally dissatisfied with their current work situation I will be available at the clinic to help them move on to more satisfying employment.’
