Charitable trusts - Case Study
The People
JH was a widow with an estate of £2 million. She intended to leave some gifts to friends and family and the rest of the estate to charity for education of under-privileged children.
The Problem
JH did not want the funds left to a registered charity to be wasted by that charity on administration expenses and advertising.
The Solution
JH decided to establish a charitable trust in her Will. The trust was set up in the names of herself and her late husband to provide a memory of both of them and the objectives were to assist towards the education of under-privileged children throughout the UK. The trust would not be looking for donations and so there would be no advertising costs and administration costs would be kept to a minimum. In addition, the gift to the trust remained exempt from Inheritance Tax.
