General Practitioner Claims

Although most clinical negligence claims involve hospital doctors, GP negligence claims are becoming more common.  GPs are expected to deal with a broad range of injuries and conditions, so there is a lot of scope for error.  GPs are required to have 'insurance' against such claims and there are a limited number of organisations who specialise in defending GPs.  That is why you need a specialist firm such as Hart Brown with experience of dealing with claims for GP negligence on your side.

GP claims can be particularly complicated if:

  • you are seen by a series of different GPs in relation to the same problem
  • there is a referral to one or more consultants or hospitals
  • the GP’s, hospitals and consultants all end up blaming each other

The most common claims against GPs include:

  • failing to  make a home visit when the available information  suggested a serious health problem
  • communication breakdowns between the GP and the hospital or a consultant
  • failing to examine or investigate properly or failing to refer to an appropriate specialist
  • errors in drug treatment for example failing to take account of allergies or simple over prescription
