Fixed Term Workers

Sometimes it makes more sense for both the employer and the employee to agree a fixed term contract.  In that way both parties know how long it is intended that the employment should last. This is fine so long as the employee on a fixed term contract is not treated less favourably than permanent employees.

Examples of less favourable treatment include:

  • training
  • promotion
  • benefits
  • selection for redundancy

If your fixed term contract is 51 weeks or less you will not be able to claim unfair dismissal but you might still have a claim for discrimination.

We have advised many employees on things like:

  • the benefits of a fixed term contract versus a permanent contract
  • the wording of fixed term contracts
  • extending fixed term contracts
  • bringing a fixed term contract to an end prematurely

To speak to someone who can advise on fixed term contract issues or any other employment related issue call, email or request a call back from one of our specialist lawyers.
