Paternity
If there is a dispute about who the father of a child is a paternity test may be necessary. This is usually in the form of a DNA test.
Paternity issues often arise in the context of child maintenance claims.
A ‘parent’ may allege that they are not the natural father and are therefore not obliged to pay maintenance. If agreement cannot be reached the only way to resolve the dispute may be through the court. This is usually the case where DNA testing is resisted.
These disputes are often highly emotionally charged and require advice from lawyers who will deal with them sensitively and practically.
At Hart Brown our family lawyers can advise and assist you in proving or disproving paternity.
