Cohabitees

More couples are choosing to live together and raise children outside of marriage.

Whereas the law provides protection and assistance to couples married or in a civil partnership if the relationship breaks down unmarried couples do not have such protection.

Many wrongly believe that their status as a common law wife or husband gives them particular rights. It does not.

Unmarried couples must rely on a mixture of property laws  and trust laws.
