Sports helmets and claiming compensation
There is much media attention on whether wearing helmets should be compulsory in cycling and other sports, especially since the tragic death of Natasha Richardson from a head injury whilst skiing.
Over 15,000 cyclists each year are involved in road traffic accidents in the UK. However, there is currently no legislation regarding the wearing of a cycle helmet, even though The Highway Code recommends that cyclists should wear one, as well as high-visibility clothing.
In the mean time, if you have recently been seriously injured in an accident and you consider someone else was to blame, it may be worth claiming compensation, whether or not precautions had been taken such as wearing a helmet.
It is important to act early if possible and instruct a solicitor who specialises in personal injury law to guide you through the process. Do not just accept the lawyer that your insurance company pushes at you – they may not act in your best interests.
