Marek has a wealth of experience in civil litigation, with personal injury and clinical negligence as his specialisms.
He is a senior litigator member of APIL ( The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers). Marek’s other professional memberships include the AvMA Panel (Action against Medical Accidents), the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury Panels. He is also a member of the Funding Review Panel of the Legal Services Commission and a Committee member of the Surrey Law Society.
He is co-author of “The Conduct of Proceedings,” a chapter in “Powers, Harris and Barton” (4th Edition, 2008) the standard text book on Clinical Negligence.
Marek has conducted many high value claims which require sensitive handling because of the severity of the injuries involved. His clients comment on his expertise and his friendly approach. Some typical responses from clients include one client thanking Marek for his work and for “the kindness in the way you always talked to me” and another client thanked Marek for “the support you have given us through some very difficult times”.
In 1998 one of his clinical negligence clients was awarded £2.3m making it the largest reported settlement of its kind at the time. Marek won a further ground breaking case in 1999 when he successfully included and recovered the cost of Viagra treatment in a high value claim making it a first and that lead to widespread comment in the Press. In 2005 Marek acted in an Erb’s Palsy claim for a child and achieved a settlement of over £300,000 - one of the biggest awards ever seen for that type of case. Most recently in 2009 £5m was the eventual lump sum settlement figure obtained in a difficult brain injury case.
Marek has been with Hart Brown since 1989. He joined Hart Brown as a trainee and after qualifying became a partner in 1995.
