In the eyes of the law discrimination occurs if people are treated differently because of their sex, race, disability or working hours, religion or belief or sexual orientation. In the next year Age Discrimination legislation is also due to come into force. Discrimination claims must usually be made within 3 months of the behaviour complained of.
If an Employment Tribunal finds an employer guilty of discrimination they can instruct the employer to:
- pay compensation
- "correct" the situation
